Major Breed Groups and What to Expect

by Robert Bishop on Apr 14, 2025
Major Breed Groups and What to Expect

The American Kennel Club (AKC) divides dog breeds into several groups based on their original functions. Here’s a quick look at the general traits within each:

1. Sporting Group

Includes: Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, Spaniels, Setters
Traits: Energetic, friendly, eager to please, love water
Best for: Active families, outdoorsy people, homes with space to run

2. Working Group

Includes: Rottweilers, Boxers, Dobermans, Great Danes, Huskies
Traits: Strong, intelligent, often protective, need training and a job
Best for: Experienced owners, structured households, those who enjoy training

3. Herding Group

Includes: Border Collies, Australian Shepherds, German Shepherds
Traits: Extremely smart, high energy, driven to work or herd
Best for: People who want a challenge, love training, and have lots of time

4. Hound Group

Includes: Beagles, Basset Hounds, Greyhounds, Dachshunds
Traits: Strong noses, independent, can be vocal
Best for: Scent work, tracking games, laid-back or outdoorsy lifestyles

5. Terrier Group

Includes: Jack Russells, Bull Terriers, Airedales
Traits: Feisty, bold, high prey drive, love digging
Best for: Active homes, people who enjoy spunky personalities

6. Toy Group

Includes: Chihuahuas, Pomeranians, Shih Tzus, Yorkies
Traits: Small in size, big in personality, often loyal and affectionate
Best for: Apartment living, single owners, those looking for a lapdog

7. Non-Sporting Group

Includes: Bulldogs, Dalmatians, Poodles, Bichon Frise
Traits: A mixed group—each breed is unique
Best for: Depends on the specific dog—research is key!

8. Mixed Breeds (Mutts!)

Often a combo of traits from various breeds
Pros: Typically lower risk of genetic conditions, each one is unique
Best for: Open-minded owners who choose based on personality, not pedigree

Factors to Consider Before Choosing a Breed

1. Energy Level

Some breeds need hours of physical and mental stimulation daily (e.g., Border Collies, Huskies), while others are content with a walk and a nap (e.g., Bulldogs, Shih Tzus). Be honest about how much time and energy you can commit.

2. Living Situation

  • Apartment? Look for quieter, smaller breeds with low exercise needs.
  • House with a yard? Medium to large active breeds may thrive.
  • City vs. rural? Some breeds bark more, others need off-leash space.

3. Family Dynamics

  • Kids: Breeds like Labradors, Golden Retrievers, and Beagles are famously family-friendly.
  • Other pets: Some breeds have high prey drives or dominant personalities.
  • Elderly/low-mobility households: Consider calm, low-maintenance companions like Cavalier King Charles Spaniels or senior dogs.

4. Experience Level

First-time dog owner? Breeds known for being easygoing and trainable (like Labs, Poodles, or mixed breeds) may be better than stubborn or high-maintenance breeds.

5. Grooming Requirements

Some dogs shed constantly. Others need regular haircuts, brushing, or even professional grooming.

  • Low maintenance: Boxers, Beagles, Dobermans
  • High maintenance: Poodles, Shih Tzus, Afghan Hounds

Don’t forget about nail trimming, dental care, and ear cleaning needs too.

6. Health Considerations

Some breeds are prone to specific health issues. For example:

  • Bulldogs: Breathing problems
  • Dachshunds: Back issues
  • Retrievers: Hip dysplasia
  • Boxers: Cancer risk

Do your homework and choose a reputable breeder or rescue that prioritizes health and genetic testing.

Adopting vs. Buying

There are great dogs in shelters and rescues of all breeds and mixes. Adoption can be an amazing experience, and breed-specific rescues exist for nearly every popular breed.

If you choose to buy, work with a responsible breeder who:

  • Allows you to meet the parents
  • Screens for genetic conditions
  • Doesn’t breed for extreme physical traits (like very flat faces or tiny sizes)

Avoid puppy mills and pet stores.

Meeting the Dog's Personality

Regardless of breed, spend time with the individual dog before committing. Ask questions:

  • Is the dog shy, social, independent, affectionate?
  • How do they respond to strangers, kids, or other animals?
  • What’s their history (if known)?

Sometimes the perfect match isn’t the breed you expected—it’s the dog who looks at you like you’re their whole world.

Finding the Right Fit

Choosing the right dog isn’t about picking the cutest or trendiest breed—it’s about finding a companion that fits your daily routine, energy, and lifestyle. When compatibility is high, both you and your dog thrive. When it’s low, you’re more likely to face frustration, behavioral problems, and stress.

Ask yourself:

  • Can I meet this dog’s needs every single day for the next 10–15 years?
  • Am I willing to learn, adapt, and grow with this dog?
  • Do I want a jogging partner, a couch buddy, a working dog—or something in between?

Dogs bring immeasurable joy, laughter, and love into our lives. But that bond is strongest when there’s mutual understanding—when your dog’s traits and your lifestyle align. Take the time to research, meet different breeds, and think beyond looks.

The right dog isn’t just one you fall in love with—they’re the one who fits naturally into your world and makes it better every day.
